Black Lives Matter

Moving Through the Transatlantic

Our group’s project topic is the Black Lives Matter Movement. This is important to GHS 210: Freedom and Movement Across the Transatlantic, because we will be looking at how enslavement during the Transatlantic Slave trade has shaped biases and behaviors towards people of color within our society today. More specifically, this would include incarceration rates among people of color, police brutality, and overall violence. We believe the Black Lives Matter Movement is a political and social movement that fights against violence and fights for the rights of people of color. We aim to showcase the violence that people of color still face within our society today. People of color have been treated as property, and as if their lives are not valued since slavery, and this is an issue that is still prominent within our world today. Our project will take a deeper look into the events that led up to the BLM movement, how it is presented within our society today, and how it is presented throughout the world. This project is centered around the perspectives of people of color within our society today, and of the past. We want to see if the perspectives of people of color has evolved since slavery, or if it has taken a new form in within our society today.

...I suppose that very few people think about the fact that the institution of the prison has claimed a place at the very core of black history, particularly since the abolition of slavery. It has been a constant theme in the lives of black people in this country...
